New rules on tipping waiting staff

Posted on Tuesday, 29 September 2009 05:53PM by TR
From 1st October it will be illegal for the hospitality industry to use tips to make up staff wages. Restaurants will have to pay salaries in full and this will also incur National Insurance on the whole amount, where applicable.

The new rules apply from the same day that minimum wage increases to £5.80 for any worker aged 21 and over. Anyone aged 18 to 21 years old will be paid £4.83 per hour, and 16 to 17 years old will receive £3.57.
